YWCA Closing In on Goals

The YWCA believes in Salem. We believe in the people who live here and the ones yet to come. That’s why we believe in the Looking Forward, Reaching Out capital campaign to build a new YWCA Center. When completed in January 2008, the new Center will be a place for the whole community to come together.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of local foundations, businesses and individuals, $1.8 million was raised toward the $2.7 million goal during the first phase of the campaign. When Gwen Carr, Campaign Chair, was asked why this first phase has been so successful, she stated very clearly and concisely; “community.” Since the inception of this incredible undertaking, the community has been at the pivot point. This project represents all that is great in Salem and is a gift to our community.

Fundraising is a bit like completing a jigsaw puzzle: you can envision the final outcome but you have to figure out how all the pieces fit together to make the picture complete. Whether individual pledges, major gifts from various sources or special events, each part fits into the bigger picture to help accomplish the goal. As much as putting a puzzle together is challenging, it is also very creative and exciting to watch as pieces fall into place.

There are an ever-increasing number of wonderful people working together to raise the capital dollars needed for this campaign. The campaign committee is comprised of highly talented, experienced and deeply committed individuals including Gwen Carr, Carol Green, Jan Margosian and Maureen McGlynn. Also on board are many others, like Liz Collins, Jane Berg and Diana Bodtker, who offer their ideas, contacts, talents and insights to the committee. The truth is that everyone involved in the campaign in some way contributes to the success of the fundraising effort. Committee members may undertake the bulk of the hands-on work but we need everyone to help us discover potential donors and to share their enthusiasm and belief in the work to be done at the new Center.

The YWCA of Salem will move into its new home in January of 2008. However, we need the last $900,000 to fully complete fundraising for the building. Please help us finish this incredible effort by giving a gift that will impact the lives of over 15,000 individuals annually.

If you discover someone you feel might be a good donor prospect, or if you have questions or would like to discuss making a donation, please e-mail Campaign Committee Chair Gwen Carr at gwecar@comcast.net or call YWCA Executive Director Carol Green at 503-581-9922 x105.

“Hardhat Tours” of the new YWCA Center: Weekly, Thursdays at noon, beginning September 20, 2007. These tours are limited to 10 persons at a time, so call Carol Green to sign up!

YWCA’s Salem Outreach Shelter

$100,000 from the Looking Forward, Reaching Out capital campaign was originally set aside for critical safety renovations at the YWCA’s Salem Outreach Shelter (“SOS”) on Fairgrounds Road. In an exciting development, the YWCA will sell the Fairgrounds Road site and purchase a new site for SOS that will increase capacity from 10 to 15 homeless families. The $100,000 in funds from the capital campaign will be used to remodel the new shelter.

The 25,000+ sq. ft. building, at 2933 Center Street NE, was the former St. Rita’s Nursing Home. The building will be shared by Catholic Community Services and the YWCA. A new HVAC system, roof and significant remodeling is underway in preparation for SOS to move into the building in October.

Catholic Community Services will occupy the front half of the building for their Independent Living Program for youths aging out of foster care. Several case managers for other programs will also be housed at the site. The YWCA will occupy the back 10,800 square foot space. The YWCA space also has a large professional kitchen, dining and living room areas, four offices and a playroom that will be occupied during the day by a Community Action Agency Headstart program for children in homeless shelters, the first of its kind in the nation.
